Objective: We investigated serum alpha2-Heremans- Schmid glycoprotein (AHSG) concentration in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS) and The control group ,and investigated whether serum AHSG in patients with PCOS was associated with insulin resistance .Methods: We investigated in a case-control study. Selecting randomly 34 women with PCOS as experimental group and 27 healthy women whose menstruation was normal and without PCOS as control group ,all Subjects come from out-patient clinic department of gynecology of the first affiliated hospital of Guangxi Medical University during the period from January to December 2007 .There were no significant deviation in age, weight, and height between experimental and control group( p>0.05).All subjects were collected Fasting blood in morning from 3rd to 5th in menstrual period(amenorrhea no limit ),meanwhile height(m),weight(kg), waist circumference(cm),hip circumference(cm),fasting glucose , and fasting insulin of all subject were measured, then calculated body mass index(BMI),waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), Homeostasis model assessmen insulin resistant(Homa—IR). Serum AHSG was determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).Then compared the Serum AHSG levels between experimental and control group ,and did the multiple linear regression analysis between AHSG and clinic indexes above.Rusult: 1. Women with PCOS had significantly higher AHSG levels than healthy persons(P<0.05). 2.The IRI of women with PCOS was significantly higher than of healthy persons(P<0.05). 3.Women with BMI≥24 kg/ m2 had significantly higher AHSG levels than women with BMI<24 kg/ m2(P<0.05). 4. Women with WHR≥0.8 had significantly higher AHSG levels than women with WHR<0.8(P<0.05).5. The serum AHSG level and The IRI of obese women with PCOS was higher than of non-obese women with PCOS(P<0.05). 6. When we considered women with WHR≥0.8 as obese women, serum AHSG level and The IRI of obese women with PCOS was higher than of obese women with healthy persons (P<0.05). 7.ultiple linear regression analysis showed that there was a highly significant positive correlation between serum AHSG concentration and IRI,BMI and WHR, there was no significant correlation between serum AHSG concentration and age. Conclusion :Our study showed that there is close correlation between AHSG and PCOS ,the women with PCOS have risk of insulin resistance. The serum AHSG level of bese women with was significantly higher than in non-obese women ,It show that obese person may have risk of insulin resistance.
