Effects On BAEP,VEP And ERP P300 In The Cerebral Palsy Children Under The Acupuncture Treatment

Objective:To evaluate the function of acupuncture in treating children with cerebral palsy.This paper adopted acupuncture method to treat cerebral palsy and assessed the clinical symptoms of the children before and after the treatment by using《Comprehensive Functional Evaluation》(CFE).It unified the nerve electrophysiology examination method to observe the changes of the children' s BAEP,VEP and ERP P300.Methods:All the cases of this research subject came from the patients who accepted treatments in the Department of Acupuncture of Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital from July 1,2008 to December 31,2008.Under the premises of agreements of the patients' parents or other guardians,according to the inclusive and exclusive criterias of western medicine,this research had put 40 children with cerebral palsy into research.Combined with differentiation syndrome and adjunct points,it selected the main points such as The Four Spirit Points,The 3-Points in the Temporal Area,The 3-Occipital Points,The 3-Points for Intelligence,The 3-Arm Points,The 3-Intellect Points on the Hand,The 3-Leg Points and The 3-Intellect Points on the Foot. This research adopted rapid pricking needling in moderate reinforcing and reducing method.The needle should be inserted to a depth of 0.1 to 0.3 cun. For the main points and adjunct points,this research took horizontal needling on the points of the head,while the other points were perpendicular inserted to a depth of 0.5 to 0.8 cun.Retain the needles for 30 minutes,twirling once every 10 minutes and 1 second for each needle without reinforcing and reducing manipulation.Pull out all the needles after the third-time twirling.The patients should be treated four times each week.A course of treatment was 32 days,totally 2 courses.The CADWELL myoelectricity evoked potential equipment was used to detect the patients' BAEP,VEP and ERP P300 pre and post treatment.Observation Indexes:(1) the evaluation of patients' comprehensive function pre and post treatment(2) the observation and analysis of neuroelectrophysiologic parameters as BAEP,VEP and ERP P300 pre and post treatment.Results:The Amelioration of symptoms assessed by CFE:The patients' symptoms improved after the treatment.Their scores after the treatment were generally higher than that before the treatment.After the acupuncture treatment,some of the patients' BAEP waveforms were split better than before.Peak latency and interpeak latency were also shorter than before and the AMPs were higher. Part of the patients' VEP waveforms were split better than before.Their PLs were shorter and the AMPs were higher.The patients' ERP P300 waveforms were also split better than before.Their PLs of P300 became shorter and the the AMPs of P300 became higher significantly.Conclusions:1) This study indicates preliminarily that using the theory of "holism concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine" as guide to treat the cerebral palsy with acupuncture is feasible.2) The study results showed that to some certain extent,acupuncture treatment can promote the patients' function development of auditory pathway,visual pathway and cognitive function,in which cognitive function was improved more obviously.3) After the acupuncture treatment,the patients ' clinical symptoms improvement basically tallies with the analysis of BAEP,VEP and ERP P300.
