Objective To investigate microvessel density(MVD) and expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),and explore their correlations to mechanism of benign biliary scar.Methods 14 cases of biliary scars of patients with the benign biliary stricture and 10 cases of normal biliary tissues were collected.The microstructure of tissues in both groups was studied with light microscopy under HE staining.Intensity of expression,location of VEGF were studied with immunohistochemical EliVisionTM staining in the benign biliary scars.The expression of VEGF and MVD were detected by semiquantitative analysis and image analysis system.Results Light microscopy showed that collageous fiber was arranged in a dense and disorderly way in the biliary scar tissues.The positive rate of VEGF was 40%in 10 normal biliary tissues and 92.9%in 14 biliary scar tissues.The expression of VEGF in the benign biliary scar group was significantly higher than that in the normal biliary group by means of statistical analysis(P<0.05).The Positive Unit of VEGF,average grey level,MVD were(15.46±2.89),(152.71±3.84),(11.68±3.49) in normal biliary tissues and(25.32±3.07),(140.53±5.35),(20.99±4.05)in benign biliary scar tissues.There were statistically significant difference in aspects of expressions of VEGF value in two groups(P<0.01).Conclusion The morphologic characters of the benign biliary stricture include the lasting existence of chronic inflammation,overdisposition of collageous fiber.The expressions of VEGF was both up-regulated and new vessel increased.VEGF might plays an important role in the development of biliary scars.
