Objective:The purpose of this study was to describe the quality of life and coping style of lung cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy and to explore the changes and the factors associated with correlation between coping styles and quality of life.Method:A longitudinal descriptive correlational design was used in this study.Patients diagnosed with lung cancer who were admitted for planned chemotherapy were approached using a convenient sampling method.Three instruments were employed for data collection.Demographic information sheet was used to collect the subjects' demographic characteristics. The EORTC-QLQ-C30 and EORTC-QLQ-LC13 was used to assess quality of life. The Jalowiec CopingScale(JCS) was used to measure coping styles.203 hospitalized patients were asked to complete questionnaires at three time points:at baseline prior to chemotherapy,on completion of first cycle of chemotherapy, and on completion of the treatment regimen(end of treatment).Descriptive analysis and spearman correlation analysis were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Science(SPSS) 13.0.Data was collected from August 2007 to September 2008 at Cancer Hospital of Fudan University and three other pulmonary disease hospitals in Shanghai. Results:There are significant differences between the quality of life at different stages of treatment for patients with lung cancer.(P<0.01).Functional scales decreased during chemotherapy. All other symptom-related items and treatment-related side effects were noted to increase while lung cancer-associated symptoms decreased. There were significant positive correlation between coping styles and quality of life except for age, income and therapeutic efficacy, significant negative correlation is noted between negative coping and quality of life, significant positive correlation between self-reliant,supportant positive coping and global health status. Conclusions:The results from our study indicate that the quality of life with lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy decreased during chemotherapy. There were significant negative correlation between negative coping and quality of life, significant positive correlation between self-reliant,supportant positive coping and global health status.
