Objective To evaluate the correlation between spiral CT(SCT) perfusion imaging and microvessel density(MVD) in rectal cancer.Methods The institutional review board approved this study,and informed prior content was obtained from participants.Perfusion CT of rectal adencarcinoma was performed with 64 section detector row CT in 30 patients(19 men,11 women;mean age,60.23±12.275 years;age range,38~82 years).,who had been proven rectal carcinoma by histologically. The largest axial surface of the primary tumor was searched on unenhanced spiral CT images,at this level the enhanced dynamic scan series was acquired Time- Density Curves(TDC) were created from the region of interest drawn over the tumor and target artery by SIEMENS 64 -Slices spiral CT,and the data were analyzed by using GE LightSpeed Ulra 8-Slices CT with commercial Software AW4.1 to calculate tissue blood flow(BF),blood volume(BV),mean transit time(MTT),and vascular Permeability - Surface area product(PS).Then MVD was evaluated by using immunohistochemical(s-p) staining of surgical specimens with mouse anti-CD34,and then MVD was correlated with perfusion parameter and pathological factors.Statistically with SPSS for Windows 12.0.Results MVD of colorectal carcinomas was from 54/HP to 118/HP,mean 77.97±16.04 /HP,and blood flow was from 32.453 ml/min/100 g to 170.480 ml/min/100 g,mean 79.990±34.294 ml/min/100 g,BV from 2.940 ml/100g to 8.845 ml/100g,mean 5.441±1.359 ml/100g,MTT from 2.010 seconds to 19.000 seconds,mean 7.975±3.925 seconds, PS from 8.740 ml/100g/min to 21.467 ml/100g / min,mean 13.685±3.089 ml/min/100 g. Both MVD and BF,MTT were associated with invasive depth,metastasis and disease stage(P<0.01),and MVD,BF increased with increasing PTNM stage,invasive depth and lymph node metastasis,MTT decreased.Significant correlation was found between them(P<0.01).No significant correlation was found between BV,PS and Clinic-Pathol ogical Factors。The positive correlation between MVD and BF was found(r=0.723,P<0.01),while the negative correlation was found between MVD and MTT(r=-0.656,P<0.01).Conclusion There is significant correlation between BF,MTT and MVD;BF and MVD increase with increasing PTNM stage,invasive depth and metastasis while MTT decreas- ed;spiral CT(SCT) perfusion imaging may be more suitable for assessing tumorigenesis than histological MVD technique in vivo.It can provide an ideal and noninvasive method to monitor the tumor angiogenesis,so as to monitoring the stage of tumor,antiangiogenic therapy and prognosis.
