Objective:Establish an animal model of human postmenopausal osteoporosis.To investigate the effects of lycopene in protecting against osteopoeosis and involved mechanism in ovariectomized rats.Methods:The female rats were divided into five groups:sham-operation group (Sham),ovariectomized group(OVX),Estradiol Benzoate theraphy group(EB).low-dose lycopene group(LLD),high-dose lycopene group(HDL),After finished the treatment,we detected the indexes:Bone mineral density(BMD).bone biomechanics of femurs and lumber vertebrae,bone histomorphometry of proximal tibia and the biochemical indexes (Ca,P,ALP,E(2),SOD,MDA,DPD) were deternined after the rats were given lycopene,and compared with the model group,the sham operation group and the EB group.Result:The ovariectomed rat reproduced the animal model of osteoporosis successfully.Comparing with the OVX group,the uterus weight of high-dose and low-dose lycopene group significantly increased(p<0.05),The Ca,P,SOD level were obviously higher and the ALP,MDA,DPD were obviously lower in high lycopen dose and low lycopene than that of the OVX group.(p<0.05).The indexes of BMD,bone bio-mechanics and the bone histomorphometry were better than that of the OVX group.Conclusion:Lycopene can markedly defer metratrophia of rat after ovariectomy and may protect Ovariectmized rats free from oxidatvie stress so that the bone absorption decreased and bone formation increased.So we can say that lycopene is a better prevention and treatment against postmenopausal osteoporosis.
