Objective: To study the effect of xuezhikang on atherosclerosis in rats by testing th e levels of VEGF and to investigate roles of the progression of atherosclerosis.Methods: 36 male wistar rats were randomly devided into three groups: (1)normal controlled group (2) high fat diet +vitaminD overload group (3) high fat diet +vita minD overload+xuezhikang group. The plasmic levels of TC,TG,HDL-C,LDL-C ,E T-1,NO,VEGF were measured after being fed for 12 weeks. Data were processed by statistical methods.Results: (1) The level of the serum triglyceride and cholesterol in the high fat grou p increased significantly(P<0.01), The level of plasma ET-1 and VEGF in high fat group was hightened while the level of the serum NO was reduced(P<0.05). Com pared with the high fat group the level of plasma ET-1 and VEGF in xuezhikang group was lower while the level of the serum NO was increased (P<0.05).Conclusion: xuezhikang can decrease the VEGF protein levels and decelerate the pr ogression of atherosclerosis.
