Qiu Jisheng(1873-1947)also named Qingyuan was born in Shaoxing,Zhejiang Province. In 1906,Qiu,He Lianchen and other doctors founded the Shaoxing Society of Medical Study, and Qiu was elected as the vice-president. In 1915,Qiu and other colleagues established the Shaoxing Branch of Shenzhou Medical Association and he was elected as the vice chairman. As the chief editor,he published the Shaoxing Medical Journal in the name of the institute. After moving to Hangzhou in 1923, Qiu founded Sansan Medical Society and Sansan Hospital ,and published Sansan Medical Books and Sansan Medical Journal. In 1936,Qiu edited and published Integration of Precious Medical Books. In June 1947,Qiu died in Hangzhou. He contributed a lot to the traditional Chinese medicine of the Republic of China.During the Republic of China, TCM faced both the competitive pressure coming from the western medicine and the restrictive policy from the government. For these reasons, the development of TCM was in such a dilemma that traditional Chinese medicine practioners had to find any feasible ways to protect and develop TCM. Aiming at preserving the national heritage and developing the TCM,Qiu started to work on editing and publishing Chinese medical documents for almost 40 years. Abundant private collection, good knowledge and experience of TCM and an excellent team ensured Qiu's work on editing and publishing of Chinese medical documents. The thought of Qiu on editing and publishing Chinese medical documents mainly reflects on three aspects:First, pay attention to reflection of TCM. Second, inherit and develop Chinese medical academy. Third, compare and integrate TCM and the western medicine. Totally, practicality played an important role in the thought of Qiu. He printed books and magazines at high costs. He thought a lot of the circulation of meical books. Among the books published by Qiu,many of them are rare editions that had been his private collection. He had been doing this kind of job for almost forty years.During the most time of his life, Qiu engaged in the work of editing and publishing Chinese medical documents, and made huge achievements which include following aspects:1 Sansan Medical BooksPublished in 1924 , Sansan Medical Books had three collections and each collection includes 33 kinds of different medical books. This series included 99 different medical books altogether. It reserved a great deal of rare copies, precious copies and handwritten copies of Chinese medical books, even several medical books written by Japanese persons were also included. After research, I found: Among the 99 kinds of medical books,21 kinds of books are only included in Sansan Medical Books. Other 12 kinds are included in this series in the form of block-printed copies and also have handwritten copies. 13 kinds of medical books were written before Qing dynasty.8 kinds were written by Japanese. In the process of editing the series, Qiu not only paid attention to the edition of every book, but also took the practicability of every book's content into account.2. Integration of Precious Medical BooksPublished in 1924, Integration of Precious Medical Books included 90 kinds of medical books which are sorted into 12 categories. When choosing the books of every category, Qiu paid attention not only to the preservative value of only existing copies, precious copies and original manuscripts, but also to the academic features and practicability of every book. After research,I found: Among the 90 kinds of medical books, 13 kinds of books are only included in Integration of Precious Medical Books. Other 10 kinds are included in this series in the form of block-printed copies and also have handwritten copies. 14 kinds of medical books were written before Qing dynasty. Only one book was written by Japanese.3.Other medical booksAccording to the survey by Qiu Shiting, besides books we had talked about, his father Qiu Jisheng also edited and published Guo Yi Bai Jia, 11 Kinds of Medical Books, 56 Kinds of Medical Books, Fu Xi Yi Shu(including 15 kinds of medical books), Assembly of The Shaoxing Medical Journal, and so on. It is a pity that many of these books had been lost now.In order to get a valuable conclusion I have made a careful and thorough research on the existing medical books edited by Qiu Jisheng. As we have learned, not only the quantity of Chinese medical documents edited and published by Qiu throughout his life is suprising, but also the editions and contents of those documents have very high value. Briefly, the Chinese medical documents edited and published by Qiu have preserved a lot of rare edition medical books. It had promoted the circulation, transmision and popularization of the academy of TCM at that time and contributed a lot to the preservation and development of TCM of the Republic of China.4. Shaoxing Medical JournalFirst published in 1908, Shaoxing Medical Journal is one of the earliest TCM journals in China. This journal had columns such as theory, medical notes, novels, jotting, communications and special documents. This journal aimed at spreading and popularization of medical knowledge, and promoted the development of the TCM. The paper column mainly published famous experts' opinions on some problems of the TCM at that time. These opinions had an important influence on the medical field. In this article, the paper column is one of the key issues in my research. These opinions mainly involve several aspects :First, compared TCM and the western medicine. Second, reflected and developed TCM. Third, the medical ethics also was one of the key points which the doctors discussed a lot at that time.5 Sansan Medical JournalBeing first published in 1923, Sansan Medical Journal was issued on the 3rd,13th and 23th of every month except July.So 33 issues were published every year altogether. This journal' columns mainly included: opinions, theory, communications, compiles, monograph, member's club, news of the medicial field etc. Many famous doctors wrote articles for this magazine. Qiu's personal influence also helped a lot to the issue of this magazine. This journal had a relatively good circulation and had an important influence on TCM at that time.Nowdays, the Party and the government are paying more and more attention to TCM. We also face both unprecedented opportunities for TCM and the challenges of modern medicine and high technology .How to inherit and develop TCM is the problem that we need to solve urgently. Through this research,we can find Qiu's achievements on editing and publishing Chinese medical documents. His thought can be the model not only for Chinese medical documents but also for the entire TCM.
