Objectives: To investigate the clinical character, pathology changes and pathogenesis of diabetic conjunctivochalas, which can provide the ex perimental theory for the diagnosis and therapy of conjunctivochalas. Methods: To observe and summary the clinical character of diabetic conjunctivochalas. To investigate the changes of conjunctiva by histology, electron microscope, immunohistochemistry and ELASA in diabetic conjunctivochalas, conjunctivochalas, diabetes mellitus and normal.Results:1. There is no differences between diabetic conjunctivochalas and conjunctivochalas in frequency of blinking, BUT, TFT and CIC. But in these indexes are higher in diabetic conjunctivochalas than normal. The secretion of tears lower in diabetic conjunctivochalas than conjunctivochalas and normal.2. It is found that scalelike epithelial proliferation, incomplete cornification, hyperpigmentation, hemorrhage in lamina propria, and micro aneurysm in light microscope and swelling and break of vascular endothelial cell in electron microscope in the conjunctiva of diabetic conjunctivochalas. Moreover, it can be found thicker, waviness and big gap colored fiber, and hemorrhage with masson. The areas of collagen is not different in diabetic conjunctivochalas than conjunctivochalas, but smaller than normal.3. The expression of MMP-1 is not different in diabetic conjunctivochalas than conjunctivochalas, but higher than normal and diabetes mellitus. There is no differences among groups. The expression of TIMP-1 is higher in diabetic conjunctivochalas than conjunctivochalas, normal and diabetes mellitus.4. The amount of AGEs in hematoplasma and the issue of conjunctiva is more in diabetic conjunctivochalas group than conjunctivochalas group. Conclusions: Thanks to hyperglycemia, the quantity and quality of dacryma changes and lacrimal film is unstable. More blinking can release irritation, which helps diabetic conjunctivochalas take palce. The changes of AGEs, college, MMP-1 and TIMP-1 are important in the development in diabetic conjunctivochalas.
