Objective: To analysis probable causes and treatment of the infection followingpermanent pacemaker implantation. Methods: We retrospectively studied the cases who admitted to our hospital forinfection following permanent pacemaker implantation form Jan, 2002 to Dec, 2007, andanalyzed the occurrence time, incidence rate, clinical character, major bacteria, treatment, hospital days and prognosis.Result: There were 14 infected patients during the 6 years and incidence rate was1.4%. Infection occurred in 6 patients(42.9%) within the first month after permanentpacemaker implantation. 2 patients were fever without pacemaker pocket infectionappearance. Based on antibiotics therapy via vein, 1 patient was just treated with changing ofdressing; 1 patient was treated with debriding pacemaker pocket and reimplant pacemaker in theold place; 1 patient was treated with lead extraction; 2 patients were removed pacemaker anddidn't need to implant pacemaker according to DCG, and 9 patients were treated with debrideingpacemaker pocket and implanting the old pacemaker in opposite side. All patients were healingwell and average hospital stay was 19.7d.Conclusion: Preventing the occurrence of infection is important. When the infectionoccurrence, antibiotic .therapy via vein is basis. Just changing of dressing is usually unsatisfactory..Debrideing pacemaker pocket and implanting the pacemaker in opposite side is an effective wayto treat patient without seriour infecton and bacteremia. Otherwise, extraction of pacemaker andleads in the early time is unavoidable.
