Sodium Tanshinone IIA sulfonate (STS), a sulfonated derivation of Tanshinone IIA, which is isolated from the root of Salvia miltiorrhiza know as"Danshen"in traditional Chinese medicine. Clinical evidence has shown that STS increases coronary blood flow and alleviates cardiac metabolic disorders, and its injections have been used successfully to treat patients with coronary artery disease and anginapec- toris in clinical practice. Formerly researches on STS were mostly interested in its pharmacologic activity, while the relative substances study of STS in the pharmaceutical products had not been reported yet. By column chromatography, including RP-gel, Sephadex LH-20 and Silica gel, the chemical reference materials of the STS were prepared and seven substances were isolated from the crude drug of STS. Four substances are identified as Tanshinone IIA, Sodium 3-Hydroxy -Tanshinone IIA sulfonate (i), Sodium Tanshinone I sulfonate (ii) and SodiumΔ1-Dehydrotanshinone sulfonate (iii). Another three substances may be the substances, which are i, ii, iii bounded with diethyl sulfate respectively, but finally affirmation required for more data. Additionally, a HPLC method is developed to determine the content of STS in it's crude drug and injections.
