Objective: To investigate the changes of fasting plasma FGF-21 levels and the relationship between plasma FGF-21 levels and body mass index (BMI), waist hip ratio (WHR), blood glucose, plasma insulin levels ,lipids as well as other factors in newly diagnose type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Plasma FGF-21 levels were measured by radioimmunoas- say in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) and controls (NGT). The relationship between fasting plasma FGF-21 levels and BMI, HOMA-IS, plasma glucose, insulin, blood fat levels ,lipids were also analyzed by bivariate ,multivariate regression and logistic regression analysis. Results: Fasting plasma FGF-21 levels in T2DM were significantly higher in controls(1.82±0.65ug/L vs. 1.53±0.6 ug/L p< 0.05).In T2DM patients:fasting plasma FGF-21 correlated negatively with fasting glucose(r= -0.311, p <0.05), FBG , fasting plasma insulin and HOMA-IS were independently related with plasma FGF-21 levels, the equation was: YFGF-21=9.337-0.377XFBG-0.308FINS+ O.689XHOMAIS. (p< 0.05);In control group ,plasma FFA was independently related with plasma FGF-21,the equation was: YFGF-21=9.337+1.090XFFA(p< 0.05). logistic regression analysis revealed FGF-21 as an independent association factor of T2DM, even after full adjustment of known biomarkers. Conclusion: The changes of FGF-21 levels are associated with metabolism disorder, and it may contribute, in part, to the pathogenesis of diabetes.
