Objective To observe the significance of changes in serum resistin levels in patients with coronary artery diseases(CAD)and CAD with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Methods Serum resistin levels were measured with ELISA in 36 CAD patients(CAD group),26CAD patients with T2DM(CAD/T2DM group)and 15 healthy subjects(control group). Results The average resistin level in CAD/T2DM group [(5.77±1.14)ng/ml]was significantly higher than that in the control group [(3.32±0.32)ng/ml,P<0.001];and that in CAD group [(4.11±0.7)ng/ml]was also significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.001); the average resistin level in CAD/T2DM group was elevated when compared with that in CAD group (P<0.001).Multiple stepwise regression analysis revealed that the independent variable that was associated with serum resistin levels was FBS,BMI and LDL .Variance analysis showed that the numbers of diseased coronary arteries(P<0.001)influenced the levels of serum resistin, and resistin levels increased with the increase of the number of diseased vessels (P=0.004).Conclusion Patients with CAD, especially CAD ones with T2DM ,have increased serum resistin levels.Serum resistin levels is positively correlated with FBS,BMI and LDL,and has a close relationship with the severity of CAD. These results suggest that human resistin has close relationship to CAD and T2DM, which might play an important role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases characteristic of metabolic syndrome.
