Objective An analysis was done to compare the prophylactic efficacy and treatment toxicity of intravesical therapy for primary superficial bladder cancer following TURBt on recurrence by 5-Fu,HCPT versus MMC.Methods Materials and Methods :95 cases of primary superficial transitional bladder cancer were treated by TURBt.After surgical management, intravesical instillation therapy with 5-Fu,HCPT or MMC was carried respectively.27 cases which refuse the intravesical therapy is the control group. Results 95 cases were followed up for 8 years. For different instillation groups, the average recurrent time is 30.1-31.3 months, 5-years living rate is 67.9%-78.5%.There is no significant difference between 5-Fu,HCPT and MMC group, while great significant difference between 5-Fu,HCPT or MMC with control group. Total treatment side effects rate is 23.1%-35.7%, mostly with low toxicity, which can be tolerance. The toxicity of 5-Fu group is higher than HCPT and MMC group, but without severe side effects. Conclusions Intravesical instillation of 5-Fu,HCPT or MMC is effective in preventing primary superficial bladder cancer from recurring after TURBt with great significant difference of the control group. Though the toxicity is higher, 5-Fu, with lower price as well as prefect efficacy, is still a prominent new drug of intravesical therapy, which should be studied further.
