Plantago depressa willd, a well-known medicinal plant, is widely used for treatment of the diseases of kidney, liver and the circulation, against cancer and lung channels. It has effects in inducing diuresis to treat strangurla, excreting dampness to arrest diarrhea, clearing heart from the liver to improve the acuity of vision. It has been used as a diuretic, an anti-inflammatory and an anti-asthmatic drug. Plantago depressa willd mainly grows at northeast, north and northwest regions in china. For the sake of proving this herb can be used in reason as medicine, this paper described the extraction, isolation and the chemical structural determinations.Extraction and isolationDried powerders of Plantago depressa willd (2kg) were extracted by heat influx in ethanol (15L, 12L, 10L respectively) for three times (2h, 1.5h and 1h respectively). The extracted solution were Amalgamated, decompressed and concentrated to cream, then it (60g) was subjected to silica gel column chromatography with ethyl acetate–methanol–water as mobile phase, ODS column chromatography with methanol-water as mobile phase and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatograph with methanol as mobile phase to afford Y1 (103mg) , Y2(200mg), Y3 ( 113mg ) ,Y4(35mg), Y5(28mg), Y6(26mg), Y7(18mg), Y8(48mg) and Y9(35mg).IdentificationCompounds Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5, Y6, Y7,Y8 and Y9were identified respectively by IR,HR-FAB-MS and NMRas ursolic acid, plantamajoside, acteoside, plantainoside D, majorosid, 10-hydroxymajoroside, geniposidic acid, dauco-sterol andβ-sitosterol.But for compound Y3, all the compounds were isolated from Plantago depressa willd for the first time.It is reasonable to use Both of Plantago asiatica L. and Plantago depressa willd as a Traditional Chinese Medicine. The results of this paper can offer some new science foundations for the development and utilization from this medicine plant.
