This thesis is composed of two parts. The firt part investigates the effects of extract of Retinervus guffae gructus and Carapax trionyei on hepatic cirrhosis using Wistar rats as experimental model. The hepatic cirrhosis was induced by subcutaneous injection of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), alcohol solution feeding (10%), and the rich hyperliprosis diet. The subcutaneous injection of the extract at the same time as the treatment in both preventive and therapeutic stage. Then albumin (A), globin (G), the ratio of albumin to globin (A/G), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), hyaluronidase (HA), the ratio of liver and spleen weight to body weight, pathologic change of liver, growth rate and mortality were determined in each group. During the preventtive stage it was shown that the injection of the extract from Retinervus luffae fructus and Carapax trionyei significantly increased A (P<0.01) and G (P<0.05), decreased ALT (P<0.01), AST (P<0.01), HA (P<0.05), and the ratio of liver weight to body weight (P<0.05) on hepatic cirrhosis in Wistar rats. The mortality, growth of body weight and the pathologic change of liver were also improved in the treatment group. After 18 days of treatment, in comparison with the model, extract of Retinervus guffae gructus and Carapax trionyei significantly decreased AST (P<0.01), ALT (P<0.05) and HA (P<0.05). Present study supports that the injection of the extract from Retinervus luffae fructus and Carapax trionyei may be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of hepatic cirrhosis in rats. The second part of my study focuses on the the effects of Prinsepia utilis Rogle oil on lipid metabolism, including total triglycerides (TC), total cholesterol (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), hepaticlipase (HL), lipoprotein lipase (LPL), fat content in liver and feces, and the ratio of liver weight to body weight, using chronic hyperlipermia as experimental model. In comparison with the model group, TC and TG decreased significantly (P<0.01 and P<0.05), while HDL-c and LA increased significantly (P<0.01 and P<0.05) after feeding with Prinsepia utilis Rogle oil, the most notable effect was identified in the high dose group. Present study suggests that Prinsepia utilis Rogle oil may improve the blood lipid metabolism and thus be beneficial for man as a good source of edible oil.
