Objective: To investigate the role of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) in the autograft and allograft and engineering bone spinal fusion. Method: 54 adult new Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into engineering bone grope, allograft group and autograft group. the rabbits underwent L5-L6intertransvers process fusion using engineering bone, autograft and allograft .the rabbits sacrificed at the 2st, 4st, 7st, 14st, 27st, 35st day after operation, and then tested using immunohistochemical observation and histological observation. Results: The process of spinal fusion, engineering bone graft group showed significantly more new bone formation than autograft group and allograft group(P<0.05). BMP-2and BMP-7were expressed different in stages of spinal fusion , The BMP-2 of expression in engineering bone graft group were significantly superior to autograft group and allograft group(P<0.05). The BMP-7 of expression in engineering bone graft group were higher than allograft group and lower than autograft group(P<0.05). Conclusion: Exogenous BMP-2 promote the ratio of fusion in the posterolateral lumbar spinal bone transplantion. BMP-2and BMP-7 play an important role in the spinal fusion.
