Objective : To identify the characteristics of peptic ulcer in the aged in relation to diagnosis and treatment . Analysis was made regarding location of ulcer and frequency of complication in 53 cases of peptic ulcer in the aged hospitalized between 2000-2007 .Results : (1)of the 53 patients with peptic ulcer in aged , 38 cases was male , 15 cases was female . The male to female ratio was 2.53:1 , aged 60-83 years old , mean aged was 68.98±7.36 . 24 patients (44%)with diabetic . (2) of the 53 patients with peptic ulcer in aged , 20 patients falled ill in spring , 6 patients in summer,18 patients in autumn , 8 patients in winter . (3) In peptic ulcer among aged persons , regular upper abdominal pain is rare . The patients with diabetic was easily generated abdominal distension and decreased food appetite than the patients without diabetic . (4) of the 53 patients with peptic ulcer in aged , 28 cases was gastric ulcer ; 18 cases was duodenal bulb ulcer ; 5 cases was complexity ulcer ; 2 cases was descending duodenum ulcer ; 14 cases was upside-down stomach ulcer ;8 cases was stomach angle ulcer . The morbidity of gastric ulcer was highly in the patients with diabetic. (5) Among the complications , bleeding was the initial system,there are 9.43% pyloric obstruction and 3.77% peptic perforation .Conclusion : (1) Duodenal ulcer is easily founded in patients with peptic ulcer in aged . (2) the morbidity of male are higher than female, moreover,the sping and autumn are the favor season。(3) Among the complications , bleeding was the initial system . In peptic ulcer among aged persons , the symptom is atypical ,so diagnosis is easy to be delayed with many other illness as complications ,which increases mortality . Gastroendoscopic diagnosis in time and treatment for bleeding are crucial . Operation in appropriate time also affects the prognosis . Anti-Hp treatment prominently decreases recurrence of peptic ulcer.
