Objective: Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is one of the most common congenital heart disease in children. There are two procedures to cure it: one is transcatheter closure, the other is surgical repair. Through comparison of transcatheter closure and surgical repair of VSD, this study will discuss clinic effectiveness and safety of both procedures. Then suitable treatment would be suggestive partly based on this study. Methods: The documents of patients with VSD treated in our hospital from May 2004 to June 2006 were collected. 72 patients were treated by transcatheter closure and 70 patients by surgical repair. The gender, age, weight, VSD size, time of operation, the closure rate, complications, death rate, patient stay, cost and so on of both groups were statistics. Then they would be compared. Results: 1. 72 patients were treated by transcatheter closure. 39 patients of them were male, 33 patients were female. The age of them was 6.32±3.00 years old, the weight was 19.87±7.73Kg, the VSD size was 4.50±1.62mm. 70 patients were treated by surgical repair. 38 patients of them were male, 32 patients were female. The age of them was 6.62±3.25 years old, the weight was 19.88±8.16Kg, the VSD size was 7.19±2.60mm. 2. There was no death in both groups. Six patients failed in transcatheter closure group but zero in surgical repair group. Complication rate was 13/72 in transcatheter closure group but it was 38/70 in surgical repair group. 3. The hospital stay of transcatheter closure group was 7.62±1.69 days and the cost was 34200.03±8000.97yuan. The hospital stay of surgical repair group was 14.19±2.33 days and the cost was 25380±4233.3yuan. 4. No blood products were administered to patient in transcatheter closure group but it was 601.43±395.81ml in surgical repair group. None of patients in transcatheter closure group was needed monitor in ICU but the monitoring time was 21.86±6.64 hours in surgical repair group. Conclusion: Both transcatheter closure and surgical repair for treatment of VSD in children are safe and effective. There are two sides in both procedures. The transcather closure has the advantage of less vulnerarious, recovering faster and fewer complications, but it is selective and the further therapeutic outcome needs to be followed up. The achievement ratio of surgical repair is higher and its cost is less. The procedure of transcather closure would be the first choice if the patient with VSD is suitable.
