Objective:To evaluate the therapeutic effect and clinica1 value of endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage in malignant extrahepatic biliary obstructive jaundice. Methods:The clinical data for 81 patients treated with either endoscopic plastic stenting (46 patients) or surgical bypass (35 patients) were reviewed and analysed. Results:There were remarkable effects on reducing the level of serum bilirubin and improving the symptoms, there was no significant difference in early stage between endoscopic plastic stenting and surgical bypass. Procedural success rate of of biliary stents placement were 98.1%(51/52),early complications of plastic stenting group were fewer than surgical bypass group, with were 6.5% and 34.3%(P<0.05), respectively.A mean hospital stay were 24.7±6.2 days in stent group and 38.1±7.3 days in surgical bypass group(P<0.05).Conclusions: Endoscopic biliary drainage is a good palliative treatment method for the malignant extrahepatic biliary obstructive, with minimal invasion, rapid recovery ,short hospital stay, low complications and apparent efficacy.
