Hlai , one of the ethnic minority populations in China , inhabits Hainan island.According to the diference from linguistics , custom , culture and physical constitution,Hlai population is divided into five branches:Meifu,Benti,Qi,Xiao and Jiamao.Opinions about the origin of Hai population have been divided on the question. To characterize its genetic structure, We analysized 10 Y-SNP loci by genotyping techniques in 205 Hlai males from three branches:Meifu,Benti and Qi. The haplogroups frequency distribution of Hlai were compared with the frequencies of other 13 related ethnic groups in East Asia. Principle component analysis was used to deal with the genetic data, and the components were transformed into geographic map.Our results showed that a total of five haplogroups were observed in three braches of Hlai population and H9 and H11 were the predominant haplogroups in them.Especially , H11 was highly prevalent. Frequency distribution and principal component analysis gives evidence on that three branches of Hlai ethnic groups have the same paternal ancestors group and was likely to be the descendant of Bai-Yue groups. We infer that their ancestors group had developed aroud Beibu Gulf. The study about the genetic polymorphism of Y-chromosomal single nucleotide polymophism indicates part genetic structure of three branches:Meifu,Benti and Qi.Some genetic evidence of origin and relationship among the three branches was showed in this study, which should be useful to detect the origin, migration and evolution of the whole Hlai groups.Similarly, the DNA data should also provide research materials for further studies.
