| Objective:To evaluate the effects of treatment with L-carnitine on infertile patients with varicocele.Methods:Seventy patients 25～35 years with infertile men with varicocele were receicved at our of andrology from January 2006 to July 2006,and randomed to two group.one group given oral L-carnitine 2g/d for 3 months.Another group given oral indometacin 2g/d for 3 months.The sperm parameters of the patients were analyzed by computer- assisted sperm analysis(CASA)system before and after treatment in three months.Semen parameters,pregnancy outcome were evaluated before, during and following L-carnitine treatment three months.Writing down serious adverse events.Results:Of the 70 patients who accomplish the 3-month L-carnitine therapy, being well tolerated during treatment.Only sperm volume remained unimproved in sperm parameters,sperm concentration in group L-carnitine from 13.4±4.2×10~6/ml to 20.3±5.2×10~6/m after treatnent(P＜0.01),forward sperm motility in group L-carnitine from 10.23±8.9%to 29.4±4.5%(p＜0.01),abnormal morphous sperm in group L-carnitine from 49.3±5.4%to 14.2±7.9%(p＜0.01).The patients in group indometacin were significantly improved in sperm concentration(P＜0.05),forward sperm motility(P＜0.05), significantly reduced abnormal morphous sperm(P＜0.05).Within 3-month after L-carnitine therapy,the rate of spontaneous pregnancy was significantly higher than that of treatment before,being 14.3%(5/35)compared with 0%.In group indometacin did not goven pregnancy during these time.Conclusion:These results indicate that Oral L-carnitine therapy is efficacious for infertile men with varicocele.
