Objective: To study the hypothesis whether polymorphism in estrogen-metabolizing gene, COMT, impact on the risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia among old men.Method: COMT (Vall58Met) polymorphisms were detected by PCR-based restriction fragment length polymorphism(RFLP) analysis in 153 BPH patients and 139 frequency-matched normal controls.Result: COMT Met/Met genetype was found in 12. 4% of BPH patients, which was significantly higher than that in controls (7.91%). Men with Met/Met genetype showed 2-fold increased risk for BPH (adjudted OR 2.023, 95%CI 1.235-3. 314) compared with those with Val/Val or Val/Met genetype. Conclusion: COMT gene polymorphisms may be a genetic risk factor for BPH among Chinese old men.
