Objective: To observe the changes of brain edema in different courses of stroke patients by the BORN-BE non-invasion brain edema monitor, and the effect of relieving brain edema by using 125ml mannitol.Methods: Brain edema in thirty-two stroke patients was detected by BORN-BE non-invasive brain edema monitor by observing the changes of impedance value in bilateral cerebral hemispheres at days 1~10 after the onset of stroke. And to evaluate the effect of 125ml mannitol in stroke patients by continuously detecting the changes of impedance value in bilateral cerebral hemispheres before and after dehydration.Results: Thirty-two patients with stroke including 18 of cerebral infarction and 14 of cerebral hemorrhage were involved in the study, 8 of them were continuously detected.①The impedance value in the affected side of cerebral hemorrhage patients after the onset of ICH was significantly lower at 1st day and significantly higher at 3rd, 5th, 7th day than that in the unaffected side (P<0.05). The impedance value in the affected side of cerebral infarction patients at 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th day was significantly higher than that in the unaffected side(P<0.05). The difference was most significant at 3rd day. There was no significant difference after 7th day (P>0.05).②The impedance value was negatively correlated with the volume of ICH at 1st day in patients with cerebral hemorrhage(r=-0.599, P=0.023), but it was positively correlated with the volume of the perihematoma hypodensity at 3rd day and 7th day (r=0.920, P=0.000; r=0.599, P=0.039).③The brain impedance value was decreased at 0.5h after dehydration, especially at 2~3h, and it was closes to that at 5~6h before dehydration.Conclusions:①The BORN-BE non-invasion brain edema monitor is sensitive and objective to reflect the changes of cerebral edema in stroke patients.②The impedance value in the affected side of cerebral infarction patients was significantly ascended. That of cerebral hemorrhage patients was decreased at first and began to ascend at 24h. Both of them reached the peak at 3rd day and continued for more than 7 days. The changes of impedance value reflect the edema formation course.③125ml mannitol can significantly decrease the brain impedance value after stroke, the best alternation is 6h in our research.
