Objectives:Accident injuries have become an important public health problem endangeringthe people health. In order to know the proportional mortality ratio, rank of leadingcause of death, the trend of change and the harm of accident death, the data ofselected accident deaths from the death report system of Tianjin are analized toprovide the reference for prevention and control of injury death.Data and Methods:The data is from the death report system of two central districts of Tianjin urbanarea. SPSS is used to establish the database and describe the trends, order of deathcauses, and some characteristics of distribution by age and sex related to accidentdeath. The standardized mortality and potential years of life lost are also calculated.Results:1. In this population from 1988 to 2005, totally 151,266 deaths reported and themortality death rate was 702.63 per 100 thousand.2. The accident death rate was 21.26 per 100 thousand that accounted 3.03% of totaldeath.3. The accident death rate from 1988 to 2005 in Tianjin showed a moderate decrease.Accident death was the fourth leading cause of death. In the causes of all accidentdeath, mortality of traffic accident was the first (27.44%), and then accidentalpoisoning (18.92%), suicide (18.37%), accidental falling (9.70%), drown(7.34%), and homicide (6.73%) in order. All above accounted for 88.51% ofaccident death.4. The order of causes are differenct between male and female. They were trafficaccident, accidental poisoning, suicide, accidental falling, drown and homicidefor male and for female they were suicide, accidental poisoning, traffic accident, accidental falling, homicide and drown.5. The accident death causes differed from age groups: Drown was the primarydeath cause from 0 to 14 years old, followed by accidental poisoning andaccidental falling; Traffic accident was the primary death cause from 15 to 59years old, followed by suicide, accidental poisoning; Accidental poisoning wasthe primary death cause from 60 years old, followed by traffic accident and accidental falling.6. Accidental death was the fourth death cause in the proportion of standardpotential years of life lost?, and stood second in the average potential years of lifelost. In the standard potential years of life lost rate of male, traffic accident wasthe first death cause, followed by suicide and drown; In female it were suicide, traffic accident and accidental poisoning. The average potential years of life lostin male and female were separately drown, homicide, other accidental accidentand effort and homicide, drown, suicide.7. The expectancy of life among residents in Tianjin from 1988 to 2005 was 75. 75years. It would increase 0.51 years if removing the accident death's influence.Accident death seemed to have less significant effect on the expectancy of life inthe population, but the influence on male is higher than the female. Conclusions:The accident death rate from 1988 to 2005 in Tianjin was 21.26 per 100thousand that accounted 3.03% of total death. Accidental death showed a decreasetrend, and it was the fourth leading cause of death. In the causes of all accident death, traffic accident stood first and the was: accidental poisoning, suicide, accidentalfalling, drown and homicide. The cause of accident death was difference by age andgender. Accidental death was one of the important cause of death in the potentialyears of life lost.Accident is one of the most important problems of public health and need to bepaid more attention for prevention and control.
