Objective: To characterize the relationships between serum matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase-1(TIMP-1) levels with serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), cross-linked N-telopeptides of typeâ… collagen (NTX), and bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with hepatic cirrhosis and chronic renal failure. Methods: Serum MMP-1, MMP-2, TIMP-1, ALP and NTX were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbentassay (ELISA). BMD was evaluated by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA).Results: (1) There were no significant correlation among MMP-1, BMD, and ALP, NTX in patients with hepatic cirrhosis and chronic renal failure..(2) There were no significant correlation among MMP-2, BMD, and ALP, NTX in patients with hepatic cirrhosis and chronic renal failure..(3) There were no significant correlation among TIMP-1, BMD, and ALP, NTX in patients with hepatic cirrhosis and chronic renal failure..(4) Serum MMP-2 concentration was significantly higher in hepatic cirrhosis patients with osteoporosis (all were diagnosed with a BMD lower than -2.5 of SD) than that with normal BMD and in the age-matched normal controls. Conclusion: (1)There are no correlations between serum MMP-1, MMP-2, TIMP-1 and BMD, as well as sALP and sNTX; (2)Serum MMP-2 concentration was significantly higher in hepatic cirrhosis patients complicated by osteoporosis than that with a normal BMD value and that in age-matched normal controls. Thus serum MMP-2 may be used as a marker to evaluate bone turnover status, but further studies are needed.
