Background and Purpose: Chronic Gastritis is an inflammation of gastricmucosa, It is estimated that over 50ï¼…of the adult in our country are sufferingfrom chronic gastritis. The main clinical manifestations of chronic gastritisare nonspecific indigestion. The disease may reoccur repeatedly for a longperiod of time. Modern medicines have obtained certain understanding of itscauses and pathological mechanism. However the treatments they come up withare lack of specificity and not effective enough. Chronic Gastritis pertainsto the category of 'epigastria pain' in Chinese Traditional Medicine(TCM).Acupuncture and moxibustion cures chronic gastritis by various methods whichare safe with few side effects. In addition, the curative effect is better andmore stable. The unique advantage of the treatment is that it can improve theclinic symptoms with efficient result. My tutor, Professor Zhuang Lixing curesChronic Superficial Gastritis by means of the diagnosis and treatment on thebasis of an overall analysis of the illness and the patient' s condition. Heselects the combination of back-shu and front-mu points, the curative effectof which has been found remarkable. In order to overcome the faintness andindetermination of TCM, to quantify the clinical curative effect, all caseswere evaluated by the curative effect criteria set according to 'Guidelinefor Clinical Study of New herbs' and 'Chinese medical syndrome ofgastro-intestinal diseases rating form'. At the same time, we used SF-S6 toexplore the treatment' s effectiveness in improving patients' symptoms andquality of life. Method: Sixty cases were divided into two groups. The treatment group whichhad 30 cases was treated by the shu-mu acupuncture and moxibustion. The mainacupoints were zhongwan (Ren 12),weishu(B 21),zusanli(S 36),while pishu(B20),zhangmen(Liv 13) added for spleen-stomach weakness cases by moxibustionwith warming needles and ganshu(B 18),qimen(Liv 14) added for stomach-liverincoordination cases by electro-acupuncture. The treatment group were treatedonce a day, five days every week. The control group which had also 30 caseswas treated with the capsule of Omeperazole, 2Omg, QD. The total course of twogroups was 4 weeks. According to some related articles and principles, wedesigned the questionnaire and asked the patients to fill it before and aftertreatment. Finally, we dealt with the data by SPSS11.5 and drew the conclusion.Result: The improvement of clinical symptoms: After treated by the shu-muacupuncture and moxibustion, the completely recovered rate was 20ï¼…,and thetotal effective rate was 90ï¼…. After treated with the capsule of Omeperazole, the completely recovered rate was 10ï¼…,and the total effective rate was66.67ï¼….The differences between two groups were significant. Meanwhile thetreatment group was better than the control group in the improvement of higherabdominal distension, stomachache, loss of appetite, eructation, watery stoolor difficult defecation. While compared with the control group, the improvementof acid regurgitation had no significant differences. The improvement of quality of life: Eight domains ,which were physicalfunction(PF),role physical(RP),bodily pain(BP),general health(GH), vitality(VT),social function(SF),role emotion(RE) and mental health(MH),weresignificantly improved than before in both two groups. The differences betweenthe treatment group and the control group in the improvement of healthutility(HU),RP and RE were significant. Conclusion: The shu-mu acupuncture and moxibustion does not only reliefthe patiens' clinical symptoms significantly, but also make great progressesof their quality of life. Forever, the methods are safe and have few side effectsand no obvious character of counteracting so that patients are willing toaccent. Therefore it is worth recommending to popularize clinical application.
