Objective:To study the relationship between the clinical factors (age of patients ,time from appear clinical symptoms and signs to diagnosed , nipple discharge smeared for cytologic examination without operation, character of nipple discharge and breast lump etc.) and benign or malignant discharge. To provide a scientific basis to more effective treatment of nipple discharge. Methods:The data of 68 cases with nipple discharge from February 2005 to February 2007 was studied retrospectively. The relationship between the related clinical factors (age ,characteristics of nipple discharge, nipple discharge smeared for cytologic examination without operation and breast lump etc.) and benign or malignant breast discharge was analyzed by using mono-factor and multiple factors analysis.Results:68 female non-pregnancy patients with nipple discharge treated in Qilu Hospital from February 2005 to February 2007 were reviewed. Their ages were from 14 to 82 years, average age is 46.3 years. Their times from appear clinical symptoms and signs to diagnosed were from one day to sixteen years, average time is 23.5 months. 68 cases all were operated. The relationship between the related clinical factors (age ,characteristics of nipple discharge, nipple discharge smeared for cytologic examination without operation and breast lump etc.) and benign or malignant breast discharge was analyzed by using mono-factor and multiple factors analysis.(1)Mono-factor analysis : patients over 50 with nipple discharge had much higher risks of suffering from breast cancer than patients under or equal to 50 ( P< 0.05) .The time from appear clinical symptoms and signs to diagnosed has nothing to do with diagnosing benign or malignant nipple discharge( P>0.05). The patients with blood nipple discharge had much higher chance of suffering from breast cancer than the patients without blood nipple discharge ( P<0.05) . The patients with nipple discharge accompanied by breast lump had much higher chance of suffering from breast cancer than the patients with only nipple discharge ( P<0.001) . nipple discharge smeared for cytologic examination without operation has not important clinical significances in diagnosing benign or malignant nipple discharge (P>0.05).(2) Multiple factors analysis : the high risk factors of breast cancer were more than 50 years old ,blood nipple discharge and nipple discharge accompanied by breast lump ( P<0.05) .Conclusion:(1)patients over 50 with nipple discharge had much higher risks of suffering from breast cancer than patients under or equal to 50. (2) The patients with blood nipple discharge had much higher chance of suffering from breast cancer than the patients without blood nipple discharge.(3) The patients with nipple discharge accompanied by breast lump had much higher chance of suffering from breast cancer than the patients with only nipple discharge.(4) Higher risks of suffering from breast cancer including age over 50, blood nipple discharge and accompanied by breast lump.(5) Age of patients , characteristics of nipple discharge and whether or not accompanied by breast lump have important clinical significances in diagnosing benign or malignant nipple discharge.
