Objective To study the effect of blue-light absorbing intraocular lens to protect retinal pigment epithelium(RPE) from blue light damage. Methods The pig retinal pigment epithelium are primary cultured and are used for experiment during from third to fifth degeneration. The subjects included: cells proteced by blue-light absorbing lens, proteced by common lens, directly exposured to blue light and unexposured to blue light . All the cultured pig retinal pigment epithelium were illuminated with blue light (50000+ 10000lux) . Comet assay was used to detect the DNA damage of retinal pigment epithelium. Results : There was a significant difference between cells with blue light direct irradiation and without it for MTL and MTM (P<0.01). There wasn't significant difference between cells with normal intraocular lens and no intraocular lens for MTL and MTM (P > 0.05) .There was a significant difference between cells with blue-light absorbing lens and normal intraocular lens for MTL(P<0.05). And there was a significant difference between cells with blue-light absorbing lens and cells with blue light direct irradiation(P<0.05).Conclusions The resuls tentatively confirmed that blue light could induce pig retinal pigment epithelium cellular indury, and blue-light absorbing lens protect pig retinal pigment epithelium from blue light damage to cells.
