Objective: To review the evolution of the current surgical treatment for breast cancer over the past twenty-seven years in the First Hospital of Jilin University (the former Bethune University of Medical Sciences).Materials and Methods: 2150 eligible patients with primary breast cancer diagnosed and surgically treated in the First Hospital from January 1980 to December 2006 were retrospectively analyzed. Characteristics of all patients population are as follow: two thousand one hundred and thirty patients (99.1%) are female, twenty (0.9%) are male. The peak age frequence was 40-49 years, 62.23% of patients were 50 years or younger. A distinct premenopausal peak was observed. 51.4% of tumors occurred in the left breast, 48.0% in the right, bilateral in 0.6%. Patients were clinically and pathologically staged in accordance with UICC, 300(13.95%)patients were stage I, 1432(66.61%)were stage II, 384(17.86%) cases were stage III and 34(1.58%) were stageâ…£. Seven hundred and six (32.84%) cancers were infiltrative duct carcinoma, 586(27.26%)were simple carcinoma, 349(16.23%) were infiltrative lobular carcinoma, 194(9.02%)were the medullary carcinoma, 97(4.51%) were the scirrhous carcinoma. Results: The peak frequency was in 40-49 years of age(39.07%), the age of the patients with breast cancers trends to become younger. The most common pTNM classification was Stageâ…¡. The mostcommon histological type was infiltrating ductal carcinoma (706 patients, 32.84%), and simple carcinoma (586 patients, 27.26%). Modified radical mastectomy was the most common operation procedure performed (1573patients, 73.16%), and was used increasingly while radical mastectomy was adopted decreasingly in recent decade. At the same time breast-conserving surgery seems to increase sharply in the near future. Conclusion: The variation of operation procedures performed on patients with breast cancers reflected the advance of our understanding of the biology of breast cancer and the progression of new treatment principles. And modified radical mastectomy had become the major operation procedure in our hospital.
