| Objective: To retrospectively evaluated the cost-effectiveness of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) compared to open cholecystectomy (OC) in a single university-affiliated hospital in China. Methods: The medical records of 238 patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis that underwent cholecystectomy between 2004 and 2005 were reviewed. Those converted to open cholecystectomy after an attempted laparoscopic cholecystectomy (n =2) were excluded. Results: Mean duration of postoperative hospital stay was 9.1± 3.4 days for the OC group, composed of 93 patients, and 6.4 ± 2.2 days for LC group, which included 143 patients. The mean cost per patient was RMB ¥(11103±2604) and RMB¥(10883±3224) for the OC and LC groups,.There was no significant difference in the mean costs .however, there were marked differences in the categories of costs. Conclusions: It was concluded that laparoscopic cholecystectomy will gaineconomic feasibility over conventional cholecystectomy in our country only when cost of ward and personnel wages increase sufficiently. |
