Stem cells are self-replicating and can also generate a number of more specialised cell types as they multiply. Two kinds of stem cells can be classified by the sources of cells: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. An adult stem cell is an undifferentiated cell found among differentiated cells in a tissue or organ, can renew itself, and can differentiate to yield the major specialized cell types of the tissue or organ. Certain kinds of adult stem cells seem to have the ability to differentiate into a number of different cell types, given the right conditions. A potential advantage of using adult stem cells from a patient is that the patient's own cells could be expanded in culture, treated to differentiate into the desired cells, and then reintroduced into the patient. The use of the patient's own cells would eliminate any possibility that they might be rejected by the immune system. Perhaps the most important potential application of human stem cells is the generation of cells and tissues that could be used for cell-based therapies. Today, donated organs and tissues are often used to replace ailing or destroyed tissue, but the need for transplantable tissues and organs far outweighs the available supply. Stem cells, directed to differentiate into specific cell types, offer the possibility of a renewable source of...
