Objective: To assess the effects of free fatty acids on adrenocorticotr- opic hormone and cortisol secretion in healthy adults. Methods: In six young male volunteers, ACTH, cortisol, FFAs and glucose level were measured during the following procedures: 1,iv Saline-Heparin (SH) infusion for 51h ; 2,iv Intralipid-Heparin emulsion (LHE) infusion for 51h. All tests were performed in random order and at least 7 day apart. ACTH level ,cortisol level and their circadian rhythm at different time points between the two tests were compared. Results: 1,There was no statistically significance in glucose level between LHE infusion and SH infusion in the first morning (8am to 11am), but glucose level was significantly higher during LHE infusion in the second morning and the third morning(P=0.022,P=0.005). 2,FFAs level was higher after 60min in LHE infused subjects than that in SH(P<0.001),maintained to the endpoint in LHE infused subjects. 3,ACTH level after LHE infusion was significantly lower than that during SH infusion in the first morning (8am to 11am) (P=0.048). But there was no...
