Background: Acute spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in complete loss of voluntary motor and sensory function below the lesion site, and causes the dysfunction of urination and defecation, which decreases the life quality seriously. Researchers have done lots of experiments abtou SCI and its therapy. However, there are no effective managements to cure such disease. It was been discovered clinically that electro-acupuncture (EA) is helpful to the recovery of voluntary motor and sensory function. Researchers have done lots of experiments to find out the mechanism, and they found that there are several way EA help the recovery of SCI, however, it is not clear at all. Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) was confirmed to be helpful to SCI and can promote, the regeneration of Central Nerve System (CNS) through its high affinity receptor Tyrosine Kinase A (TrkA), people still don't know is there any relationship between NGF and the rescovery of SCI with EA treatment. Objective: To observe the changes of the NGF and its receptor TrkA in spinal cord tissues of rats with acute spinal cord injury after EA treatment. Methods: 1. Forty-five SD rats which are two months old and either sex were divided into three groups: sham operation group, control group and EA group with 15 in each. The rats of sham operation group were operated by opening the vertebral canals without SCI and EA treatment. The rats of the other two groups were performed with Allen's method by a 10 g X 2.5 cm contusion on the posterior T12 spinal cord. The rats in control group were operated only, without EA treatment. EA group: One needle was given to the injured segment (the 10th-11th thoracic spine) and spinous process interspace (the lst-2nd lumbar vertebra ) respectively by G6805-2 multifunctional therapic equipment with sparse-dense wave, 0.5 ms in frequency, and...
