| Background and Objective: One of the most impressive outcomes of sleep deprivation is its dramatic antidepressant effect in patients with primary depression. One night sleep deprivation exert more rapid antidepressant efficacy. Puzzlingly, such effect is transient and depression is usually reinstated after the first episode of recovery sleep, or even after short naps .To date, the mechanism of the acute antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation has not been clarified. Sleep deprivation for one night induces mood improvement in depressed patients, an action that probably involves the serotonergic (5-HT) system. To investigate the mechanisms of this antidepressant effects during sleep deprivation and the possible involvement of 5-HT1A receptor, we studied the effects of an 72-hour REM (rapid eye movement) sleep deprivation, by flowerpot technique, and recovery sleep on the expression of 5-HT1A receptor mRNA in corresponding brain in chronic mild unpredictable stress (CUMS) animal model.Materials and Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups randomly: 1) normal control rats, 2) CUMS depressant animal model. Then after 21d CUMS, the depressant animal model were divided into four... |
