Objective To improve the diagnosis and treatment of primary ureteral transitional cell carcinoma.Methods The clinical characteristic, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis were analysed retrospectively in 42 cases of primary ureteral transitional cell carcinoma.Results 42 cases were followed up from 3 months to 8 years , the 5 years survival rate was 51.9 %(14/27).According to pathologic grade, the 5 years survival rate was 75.0%(3/4) in G1 tumor, 56.3%(9/16)in G2 tumor and 28.6%(2/7) in G3 tumor. According to pathologic stage, the 5 years survival rate was 72.7%(8/11) in Ta~T1 tumor,66.6%(4/6)in T2 tumor,33.3%(2/6) in T3 tumor and 0 in T4 tumor.Of the 42 cases,13(31.0%) developed bladder cancer subsequently.Conclusions It was considered that cystoscopy,retrograde pyelography,and ureteroscopy are the most important approaches. Its diagnostic accuracy might be improved by combined use of many diagnostic means before surgery. Nephroureterectomy with excision of bladder cuff should be the treatment of choice.
