HFRS is one of the infectious diseases of high priorities for control and prevention in China, with severe illness and high fatality rate, which consistutes a public health problem with serious threat to people's life and health. Shandong Province is one of the most seriously affected provinces by HFRS in China, with the annual reported cases being among the top rank of the country. For more efficient response and containment of HFRS in Shandong province, based on the epidemic situation and the surveillance of host animals, we apply the theory and techniques of epidemiology and statistics, to explore the tendency of HFRS in Shandong province, and its association with resevior change and fluctuation, to provide the foundation of preventing HFRS in the province. ObjectivesTo study the epidemic tendency of HFRS and the natural infection status of Hantavirus in its host animals, through analyzing epidemic situation of HFRS and the surveillance of host animals in Shandong province from 2003 to 2005, to explore the make-up, density, carriage of Hantavirus, the index of Hantavirus carriage of host animals and their association with HFRS epidemics through systematic surveillance in rural villages in Linyi city, Shan dong province from Feb 2004 to Jan 2005, and to understand the herd immunity level against HFRS or inapparant infection status among the general population by detection of Hantavirus antibody.
