Aim: To summarize the experience in the causes and treatment of intestinal obstruction.Methods: We collect 744 cases of intestinal obstruction from January 1996 to December 2005 in our hospital, aggregately analyze the etiological factors, diagnosis and treatment of patients with intestinal obstruction, summarize the change of etiological factors to direct the clinical diagnosis and treatment.Result: Out of the 744 patients with intestinal obstruction, mechanical bowel obstruction occurred in 668 patients, dynamic ileus in 36, and vascular intestinal obstruction in 20. Out of the causes of mechanical bowel obstruction, 352 cases (52. 69%) were due to peritoneal adhesion, 216 cases (32. 34%) intestinal malignant tumors, 60 cases (8.98%) incarcerated hernia, 18 cases (2.69%) volvulus and 16 cases (2. 40%) fical impaction. Out of the 344 patients above 50 years old, 152 cases (44. 19%) were due to intestinal malignant tumors, 136 cases (39. 53%) peritoneal adhesion, 40 cases (11.63%) incarcerated hernia. Out of 316 cases with history of abdominal operation, 276 (87. 34%) were due to adhesion, Out of428 cases without history of abdominal operation, 181 were due to intestinal tumors.276 patients with adhesive intestinal obstruction had history of abdominal operation, such as the most common operation: appendectomy, 76 were due to inflammation such as acute peritonitis. 64.77 percent of adhesive cases were cured nonoperatively.
