Purpose: To assess the value of multi-slice spiral CT and its post-processing technique in the diagnosis and staging of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer.Materials and Methods: 20 cases of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer were examined by 16-slice spiral CT before operation. The transversal sectional reconstruction with thickness of 0.75mm was performed. The multiple planar reconstruction(MPR) and virtual laryngoscopy(CTVL) were performed later. The two-dimension and three-dimension reconstruction images were used to investigate the tumor extension and the stage of tumor. The findings on CT were compared with the results of operation and pathology in details. Results: Of 20 cases, there were 6 supraglottic cancers, 2 glottic cancers, 4 transglottic cancers and 8 pyriform sinus cancers. The spiral CT images could show the location, shape, size and extension of the tumors. Many surrounding structures were invaded. All the hypopharyngeal cancers caused the rotation and displacement of larynx in various degree and widening of cricoid cartilage-vertebra distance and arytenoid cartilage-vertebra distance, while all the laryngeal cancers didn't, except one case involving postcricoid area. The images of MPR and CTVL were made in all cases. MPR images were...
