In the present paper, two efficient methods for simultaneous gas chromatographic determination of 18 OCP residues in TCM and 29 OCP residues in Radix Codonopsis were established. The former method can be applied to more species TCM and can analyze more OCPs than the method recommended in Pharmacopoeia of the PRC. The OCP residues in 48 kinds of TCM were determined and the limit of OCPs was proposed. In the multiresidue analysis of 18 OCPs [tecnazene, hexachlorobenzene, a-BHC, pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB), γ-BHC, heptachlor, aldrin, methyl pentachlorophenyl sulphide (MPCPS), β-BHC, d-BHC, heptachlor epoxide, a-endosulfan, trans-chlorodane, cis-chlorodane, p,p'-DDE, o,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDD and p,p'-DDT] in TCM, Radix Codonopsis were used for the extract and cleanup conditions optimization. 13 kinds of TCM on behalf of different species of TCM were used for the recoveries studies. Samples were extracted with acetone: petroleum ether (1:1) for 15 min, three steps; cleaned by concentrated sulphuric acid with 10% water, and determined by GC-ECD. Thirteen kinds of TCM such as Radix Codonopsis were used for the recovery studies. The limits of detection of the 18 OCPs were 1.29.0×10 -13g, and the average recoveries of the 13 kinds of TCM were more than 80%.
