Paris Polyphylla Smith as a famous folk medicinal herb in China has been used not only as an anti-cancer, anti-biotic and anti-inflammatory drug but also to treat snake bite, parotitis, mastitis, chronic bronchitis, injuries from fractures as well as to stop bleeding. This thesis dealed with the extraction and systematic isolation of Paris Polyphylla Smith, as well as the structure elucidation of the compounds isolated from this plant. Modern techniques combined with traditional methods, especially the column chromatography over silica gel, D-101 highly porous polymer resin, Sephadex LH-20 and RP-18, were adoped in the experiment. Six pure compounds have been extracted and isolated. They were CH3(CH2)14COOH (A), C57H104O6 (B), 25R-diosgenyl-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→ 2)-[α-L-arabinofuranosyl-(1→ 4)]-β-D-glucopyranos ide(C), 25R-diosgenyl-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-( 1→ 4)-α-L-rhamnopyr anosyl-(1→4)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucopyranoside(D),25 R-pennogenyl-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→ 2)-[a-L-arabinofuranosyl-(1→ 4)]-β-D-glucopyranoside (E) and diosgenin (F).
