The drug-induced hepatic injury (DIH) is a common liver disease and its incidence rate is increasing day by day, due to various categories and development and utilization of drug. According to the statistics of American Medical Association (AMA), DIH occupied an important position in drug adverse effect.Hepatic injury caused by Chinese herbs is becoming increasingly outstanding and makes up a large proportion in DIH.Fructus Xanthii is dry, mature and involucral fruit of feverfew Xanthium sibiricum Patr. .It is acrid, bitter, mild and poisonous, going back to the lung meridian. It has the effects of dispelling wind and dampness and dispersing nasal cavity. In clinical therapy, especially in nasal diseases, it is a common or an indispensable Chinese medicine. Being poisonous, it must be processed before taking. It does principally harmful to substance organs, especially liver and kidney. So it is important to study the effect of toxicity, especially to study how to reduce its toxicity, which is helpful to use it safely in clinical treatment.Basing on the forthcoming research, we study its toxic effect on liver as well as its mechanism of attenuation in compatibility in those aspects as follows:Three treated groups of mice were administered 30 days with repeated gastric infusion in three doses, which are lg/kg weight, 5g/kg weight, 20g/kg weight and the group of control with physiological saline. The results showed that the increase of weight was small in the three groups in the first two weeks. The total increase of weight in all treated groups was relatively lower than that in the group of control, the value of ALT, AST, ALPincrease and that of TPR and ALB decrease. In study of reversibility, the increase of weight in all treated groups was much lower than that of the control. However, it recovered after withdrawal two weeks and the sum of increase in six weeks was not notably different with the control. The value of AST in middle and high dosage group is much higher than that in the control one after withdrawal two weeks. The vital impulse of GSH-Px and GST in all treated groups decreased and the contents of MDA increased along with the dose. In the group of high dosage, the vital impulse of GSH-Px and GST decreased by 31.5% and 30.3% respectively and the content of MDA increased by 41.4%.In study of compatible with Radix Astragali(RA) in different ratios, the result indicated that the toxic function for FX on liver can be reduced to a great extent. Synthetic analysis showed that the group of 2 to 1 is superior.
