Objectives: To assess prevalence of anemia and its correlation with NYHA-class in patients with chronic heart failure. Methods: 183 patients (mean age 62±12 years) with chronic heart failure who had clinical, laboratory evaluation and echocardiography.86 patients (47.0%) were in NYHA-class Ⅰ and Ⅱ, 97 (53.0%) class Ⅲ and Ⅳ. Patients with secondary anemia or on hemodialysis were excluded. Results: Anemia (hemoglobin<120.0g/L) was present in 43 of 183 patients (24.0%). There were significantly more patients with anemia in NYHA-classⅢ and Ⅳ (30%) compared with class Ⅰ and Ⅱ (16.0%, P<0.05). Duration of follow-up was 17 months. During follow-up, 4(5.0%) patients died in NYHA-class Ⅰ and Ⅱ, and 18 (19.0%) patients in class Ⅲ and Ⅳ (P< 0.01). Mortality was significantly greater in anemic subjects compared with nonanemic subjects (23.0% versus 9.0%, respectively, P<0.01). Conclusions: The anemia in chronic heart failure patients is common and its degree is correlated with the severity of heart failure.
