Purpose: Color is one of the most significant factors which affect the esthetics of restoration. Shade matching is a crucial step to confirm the color of a restoration. There are many factors influencing the veracity of shade matching , including the color of oral mucosa. The purpose of this study was to find out whether the color of oral mucosa affects the color of tooth and whether the influence can be perceptived by human eyes. Thereby provides a theoretical basis for precise shade matching in clinic work. Furthermore performing prelimetory shade matching experiments with gingival shade guide to find out a convenient method which can decrease the influence coming from the color of oral mucosa.Apparatus and methods: In this study, a spectrophotometer(PR-650) was used for color analysis. There were 38 persons chosen from ChengDu at random whose A1 attached gingivae were tested and L*a*b* values of their colors were determined to acquire the chroma range of normal gingiva.
