Objective To compare the effectiveness of function neck dissection (FND) with radical neck dissection (RND) for the manage ment of hypopharyngeal carcinomaMethods Two treatment groups of hypopharyngeal carcinoma were compared retrospectively:139 patients who were treated with RND between January of 1994 and December of 1999, and 255 patients who were treated with FND between January 1995 and December 2000.Results The neck recurrent for FND population was 20. 5%,which was not statistically different from the neck recurrent in the RND population 28.1%.Also, the 5-year survival rates were no statistic difference between FND and RND groups (51% vs 45%). Complications and period of hospitalization were both decreased in FND group comparison of RND group 74.8%29.4%;28 days va 39 days). Conclusion Comparing to the radical neck dissection, the effectiveness of the FND was no statistic difference and the FND offers less invasive surgery and less morbidity without oncologic compromise for patients of hypopharyngeal carcinoma. |
