Background: Acne vulgaris is a distressing condition that affects the majority of adolescents, with its etiopathogenisis not fully understood. No universally accepted standardized classification system for acne vulgaris exists, although there is a strong need for it. Thus, the clinical definition of acne has been unclear in many studies. The reported prevalence of acne varies from 35% to over 90% of adolescents at some stage. Several studies have investigated the risk factors of acne but had conflicting results. Seasonal variability had been detected in acne vulgaris, with the colder months associated with exacerbation and the warmer months showing improvement. And there is increasing evidence that acne is a highly inheritable disease, but not confirmed in Chinese Hans. The conceptions and knowledge of acne had been shown to be very low among patients. Objectives:To describe the epidemiological features on acne prevalence among Chinese college students, a cross-sectional study on acne prevalence and risk factors was carried out in a medical university. Also, relations between seasonal variation and acne were described. And students' perceptions and knowledge of acne were assessed. Methods:Students from a medical university were invited to take part in this study on a voluntary basis after a public invitation. For thousand six hundred and twenty two students aged 15-22 years participated. Acne severity was graded by visual facial examination using a modification of the Pillsbury system which determines severity on the basis of number, extent and nature of...
