Abstract/Summary:
Objective: to study the relationship between microvessel density (MVD) and pathological characteristics and survival rate in cases of breast cancer through observing MVD of the cancer. Therefore we provide evidence for complementary treatment after operation so as to enhance the survival rate and quality.Method: the cancer tissues of 165 cases of breast cancer were made into paraffin sections. The MVD in the tissues was determined by S-P immunohistology. Besides, the relationship between MVD and pathological characteristics is statistically analyzed to estimate the function of MVD in the course of breast cancer in order to provide further evidence in predicting the prognosis and complementary treatment.Result: (1) the MVD distribution is different in the 165 cases. Amount of microvessel in cancer area was from 6 to 61 in the view of 100 times microscope, with the mean being 21.56±12.47, the median 21. The patients were divided to two groups according to the median of 21. The high MVD group included the patients with higher value more than 21, while the low MVD group with lower value than 21. (2) The relation between MVD and clinical pathological characteristics indicated that MVD was related to the size of the tumor, armpit metastasis of lymph node and the prognosis. MVD of metastasis of lymph node in the armpit was 26.01±14.24. The MVD of non-metastasis of lymph node was 16.27±7.95. The difference was significant (P<0.05). MVD was 24.96±13.71 when diameter of the tumor was more than 3.5cm. MVD was 15.31±7.49 when diameter was less than 3.5cm. The difference between groups was significant (P<0.05). MVD increased when the histology classification increased, but the correlation between MVD and the histology classification was not obvious. In addition, MVD was not significantly related to age and estrogen receptor (P>0.05).Conclusion: (1) MVD and its distribution in breast cancer tissue: its distributions were different in various cancer tissues. High MVD was in the edge of tumor. (2) the relation between MVD and clinical pathological characteristics: MVD of metastasis of lymph node in the armpit was 26.01±14.24. MVD was 20.65±11.56 when ER was positive while MVD reached 21.79±12.63 when ER was negative. The difference was not significant. MVD was not related to age. (3) the relationship between MVD and survival rate of the breast cancer cases: the five years survival rate(48.1%)of high MVD group after operation was much lower than that of low MVD group (79.6%) according to statistics analysis. MVD was closely related to the survival rate and it provides evidence for...
