Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of partial splenic arterial embolization (PSE) combineing with invigorating spleen and removing blood stasis for hypersplenism in portal hypertension (PHT) .Materials and Methods: From Jan.2000 to Apr.2006, 46 patients with hypersplenism in PHT dignosed by clinical laboratory and imageology examination in the first affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of TCM were observed. All patients were treated by PSE Combining with Invigorating Spleen and Removing Blood Stasis. 12 patients were treated by PSE combining with transcatheter hepatic arterial infusion salvia miltiorrhiza. All patients were observed white blood count (WBC), red blood count (RBC), platelet count(PLT), liver function, hemodynamic indexs of portal vein(PV) and splenic vein(SV) before and after operation, observed reactions and complication after PSE.Results: Compared to the condition before operation , the study showed the reduced WBC and PLT increased significantly in one week, and gradually decreased to and stabilized at the normal level one month later, RBC didn't change obviously. The liver function of the group that all patients were infused salvia miltiorrhiza from hepatic artery didn't changed obviously in one week after operation, but the others aggravated. The livers function of all cases improved one month later after operation. The inside diameter of PV, SA and SV contracted, the rate of blood slowed down and the volume of blood flow decreased. The time of fervescence was 8 days averagely. The time of persistent pain was 4 days averagely. No severe complication occurred in all cases after operation. The short therapeutic effect is certain. Conclusions: 1. The treatment of PSE combining with invigorating spleen and removing blood stasis could eliminate hypersplenism, decrease the portal hypertension, corrects white blood cell counts and platelet count effectively, improve liver functiong effectively, shorten the time of fervescence, eliminate gastrointestinal adverse effect.2. Transcatheter hepatic artery infusion with salvia miltiorrhiza could improve liver function, which was further studied due to limited cases.
