Great efforts were made to detect and diagnose early stage lung cancer with portable and efficient apparatus as it is reported that the death rate of lung cancer keeps rising during these years. We noticed that detection of lung caner in early stage is important if people want to promote the lung cancer patients' survive rate in clinical treatment, In this work we detected and compared the VOCs in lung cancer patients' breath in different stage and of different type to determine the correlation between early stage lung cancer and its marker VOCs. It is helpful to design the electronic nose system that can detect the marker VOCs of the early stage lung cancer and make the diagnosis. In this paper, the knowledge of early stage lung cancer, the stage determining principle of lung cancer, various existing lung cancer detection ways, breath detection principle, and the knowledge of SPME & GC have been particularly introduced. The correlation between early stage lung cancer and the marker VOCs by detecting different stage, especially early stage patients' breath and other lung disease patients' breath by solid phase microextraction(SPME) and gas chromatography(GC) system are introduced as well. After that the advantage and disadvantage between the electronic nose system and the existing clinic ways to detect and diagnose early stage lung cancer patients are discussed. Comparison between computed tomography and electronic nose system is specially made, and the prospect of the electronic nose used in early stage lung cancer detection is proposed.
