OBJECTIVE: We report our experience in an attempt to explore the usefulness of Computed tomography (CT) scan in the diagnosis of adult Intussusception and the optimal treatment in this entity. METHODS: Fifteen cases of adult intussusception were encountered at our institute between 1998 and 2005. Data related to presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and pathology were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: CT scan was used in eight patients, and it made the diagnosis in all eight patients. Ultrasonography was used in twelve patients, and it made the diagnosis in nine patients. Colonoscopy was performed in six patients, and it made the diagnosis in two patients. Operative treatment was performed in thirteen patients. Two patients were treated nonoperatively. All the colonic lesions were resected without reduction. Small bowel lesions were reduced or partly reduced before resection.CONCLUSIONS: The CT scan is most useful in making the diagnosis of adult intussusception. Colonic lesions should be resected without reduction because most causes of it are malignant tumors. Small bowel lesions should be reduced or partly reduced before resection.
